At Modern Warrior Institute we provide training in Filipino Martial Arts, which is also known by several other names: Kali, Arnis, Eskrima. In the Philippines it is most commonly known as Arnis.
We provide combat-based training that is applicable to both self-defense scenarios and competitive environments, with a heavy emphasis on sparring. The training generally consists of 50% technical sparring, 30% drills, 20% high-intensity training. Read below for the different components included in the training.
Panantukan refers to the striking component of Filipino martial arts, and is sometimes nicknamed "Filipino dirty boxing". Like Muay Thai, it includes punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. Unlike Muay Thai, Panantukan is purely offensive and has more similarities with the predecessor of Muay Thai than the current sport-oriented form. Some of the main differences are the inclusion of headbutts, "limb destruction" techniques, and tripping.
Dumog techniques can be assisted by the environment around you, a wall, lampost or vehicle for example, which helps to immobilise the opponent, or hurt him further by collision with the object. This also creates opportunities for close quarter striking using head butts, knees, forearms and elbows.
Dumog refers to the grappling component of Filipino martial arts. Dumog contains joint-locks and choking techniques, as well as takedowns, throws and submission holds. Unlike Submission Wrestling or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the goal in Dumog is to remain standing after taking down your opponent. Dumog techniques can also be used to manipulate an opponent for use as a shield to protect yourself during a multiple attacker scenario, or to quickly move an unwanted person from an area, for usage by security or law enforcement personnel.
Hitting each-other with sticks. 'Nuff said.
Almost all Panantukan and Dumog techniques can be adapted to be done with a stick. Stick fighting is an excellent way to train in a controlled environment to handle real-world violence.
For those of us who feel that MMA isn't enough.
